(New Values and New Stories)以及時裝行動主義:社區(qū)與政治(Fashion activism: Community and Politics)。

A Dutch-Chinese collaboration
The OCT Art & Design Gallery, The Han Nefkens foundation and museum Boijmans Rotterdam are proud to present their collaboration in the exhibition Future of Fashion is Now that will be shown in OCT Shanghai from 28 October till February next year and also in Shenzhen during the following year. In this exhibition work of 40 designers from all over the world is shown including eight designers from China.
Seeking a New System of Fashion
The exhibition gives the floor to a new generation of designers from all over the world that have the intention to re-shape the fashion system. Coming from different angles of the world, they share the same critical attitude towards the current fashion system: they realize that fashion, with its pressure on consumers to buy something new every six months, cannot be sustainable for the long term as Zhang Da (China), Dooling Jian (China) show. And at the same time they are aware of the countless new technological advances, to develop new approaches to what ‘fashion’ could be. Iris van Herpen (NL), Pauline van Dongen (NL) and Ying Gao (China) present some of these alternatives in 3D printing collections or reacting clothes.
The internet, social media and hundreds of fashion weeks have brought fashion within everyone’s reach since the start of this millennium, and this raises the question of what exactly these newcomers can offer fashion in terms of innovation: The Future of Fashion is Now shows that the new generation of designers do indeed draw heavily on their own roots and history, but at the same time succeed in linking them to the latest technology and translating them into a universal narrative, which they do not reveal through a product (clothes) but open up by way of a process, installation or film as Movana Chen (China), Viktor & Rolf (NL) and Dooling Jiang (China) show.
Nowadays a designer label can be launched in a webshop anywhere in the world, and designers are working with slow fashion and other activist fashion initiatives to investigate the possibilities of persuading us to make do with the same clothes for longer. In short, what actually are the values of fashion and clothes? And what is their importance in our ‘global’ culture? These are the fundamental social questions that young designers ask themselves these days. Many of them are coming up with new, fresh ideas and solutions as to what fashion could mean.
Six Special Commissions to Make New Work
In the spring of 2013 twenty scouts from all over the world nominated their favourite talents. On 18 November 2013 a panel of judges (Viktor & Rolf, Han Nefkens, Jose Teunissen, Karin Swerink and Vassilis Zidianakis) have chosen from this list six designers who have been commissioned to make new work for this exhibition. See www.thefutureoffashionisnow. This site shows the creation processes of these commissions. In Shanghai Han Nefkens Fashion on the Edge will commission one new work out of a selection of young Chinese talents. The result will be shown in Shenzhen.
Structure of the Exhibition
The Future of Fashion is Now is being set up as a platform for around 40 designers from all over the world who show new lines of approach, values, production processes and interpretations of fashion. The exhibition is divided into four themes with the titles Materiality and Experience Reshaping the human figure, New Values, New Stories and Fashion activism: Politics/Community.
Relevance for China
Currently China is one of the biggest producers of textiles, clothing and fashion. Recently young Chinese fashion designers have developed interesting, independent designers labels in China and are being recognized by international press. The Chinese quality and identity of these young designers that combine the Chinese culture with its enormous heritage and tradition in crafting and dying fabrics with technology and sustainable thinking is interesting.
The future of Fashion is now proves to be a perfect occasion to explore and connect knowledge institutes, industry and designers of China and the Netherland to share their ideas and thoughts on the changing fashion system. For China the most interesting aspect of the exhibition is that it not looking back in history, but tries to describe the Future. The major Dutch Fashion Institutes (AMFI and ArtEZ) were already collaborating in the International Federation of Fashion and Technology Schools (IFFTI) with their Chinese counterparts Beijing Institute of Fashion and Technology (BIFT) and Donghua University in Shanghai. On October 29 2015, OCT Art & Design Gallery, DutchCulture of center for internaitonal cooperation and Donghua University will hold a series of forum with some designers and scholars at Donghua University. Besides there will be collaborations developed with TeDAO (Shanghai) and and the fashion department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in research and Fashion Theory education.
